Shall I go to Basilicata or to Lucania? …. That’s a bit confusing! Let me try to make myself clear: just take it easy and if you wish to find Lucania and instead end up in Basilicata, you’re still in the right place! Actually, the official name of the region is Basilicata, but in ancient times it was Lucania. We don’t really know why, but the inhabitants of this region prefer to be called “Lucani”.
Since I too am a “lucana” in this article I will always refer to Lucania, and this tour takes us exclusively in Lucania. I suggest we travel in Lucania in search of a still genuine territory, wild and charming at the same time. But where is this place? First of all Lucania is in Italy, and precisely in Southern Italy; it’s a small region with no more than 500.000 inhabitants. The territory is varied. It’s surrounded by two seas, the Ionian with old Metaponto on the East and the Tyrrhanean on the west where there is the splendid city of Maratea. It is a rather poor region where many old traditions survive to this day. Inland the territory is mountainous, with Mount Pollino, around 2.250 metres high, on the border with Calabria. The countryside is flat and coloured with wheatfields according to the season, with rivers that cross the territory tracing unforgettable landscapes.
